Updated: Dec 6, 2019

Pence commemorates our country's heroes on Veteran's Day 2017.

ARLINGTON, Va. – Remembering those who served our county and came home safe was the main focus of Vice President Mike Pence’s Veteran’s Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery today.

Pence took the beginning of his speech to thank the uniformed men and women who have served not only in wartime, but in times of peace as well.

While Pence himself never served, he spoke of the burdens and sacrifices he witnessed through his father and son who both served. He also told the story of a first lieutenant and Medal of Honor recipient who attends this ceremony every year.

“Heroism outlives the uniform,” Pence said.

The vice president talked at length about the many actions that President Donald Trump and himself are taking to make sure veterans who return home get the care they need.

According to Pence, 15,000 employees of the Department of Veteran’s Affairs have been fired or suspended due to negligent behavior of veterans.

“Veteran’s benefits are not entitlements. They are earned,” Pence said.

Trump and Pence are working to expand benefits of the GI Bill and increase military spending. Pence said that their goal is to give the military the resources they need to accomplish their mission and come home safe.

Veteran unemployment has fallen 40 percent since Trump was elected according to Pence.

Trump was not in attendance at this event.
