Program Launches in September, Addresses Industry Need for More Diesel Technicians

LISLE, Ill. (July XX, 2019) – Navistar International Corporation (NYSE:NAV) has donated 10 International® trucks, along with engines and other relevant equipment, to the City Colleges of Chicago for its new Diesel Technology program at Olive-Harvey College, which launches in September.

In recent years, a shortage of diesel technicians has posed challenges for the commercial transportation industry. Navistar’s support for the City Colleges program is intended to counteract this shortage and support a meaningful community-based program in STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

“STEM education is a major focus of Navistar’s community involvement, and the City Colleges program is a great example of practical help that can address a major industry issue – the ongoing shortage of qualified diesel technicians,” said Kristin Sattayatam, director of employee communications and community relations, Navistar. “Navistar’s donations will support meaningful, good-paying jobs by giving students hands-on experience working on real equipment they will encounter during their careers. Students, the community and the industry as a whole will benefit.”

During the upcoming 2019-20 school year, City Colleges of Chicago’s Diesel Technology program will be housed at the 103,000-square-foot Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (TDL) Center at Olive-Harvey College in Chicago. The diesel program was designed with input from faculty and industry partners to serve 3,000 students over the next 10 years. The TDL Center will house automotive and diesel engine laboratories, an engine dynamometer, classrooms, simulated driving facilities, a testing area and vehicle bays, among other features.

“We cannot thank Navistar enough for the opportunities these trucks, engines and other equipment will provide for our students,” said Eric Lugo, executive vice chancellor and chief of staff, City Colleges. “Our goal here is to deliver the best STEM education possible and prepare students to fulfill much-needed technician roles in the industry.”

Future projections from the Illinois Department of Employment Security show that the need for diesel technicians will continue to grow, increasing nine percent from 2016 to 2026. More than 110,000 TDL jobs are expected to come to the Chicagoland area in the next 10 years.
